Fred Meyer is a chain of hypermarket stores founded in 1922 in Portland, Oregon, by Fred G. Meyer. The stores are a one-stop shopping destination, combining a complete grocery supermarket with a drugstore, clothing store, shoe store, fine jewelers, home decor store, home improvement center, electronics store, toy store, sporting goods store, and more under one roof. Fred Meyer stores are primarily located in the Western United States, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. The company has gone through several ownership changes over the years and is currently a subsidiary of Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S.

History[edit]

Fred G. Meyer, the founder, opened the first store in Portland, aiming to provide customers with a convenient way to shop for a wide range of products under one roof. This innovative concept was revolutionary at the time and set the stage for the future of retail. Over the decades, Fred Meyer expanded its operations, opening stores in several states in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. In 1998, Fred Meyer merged with Kroger in a deal that expanded Kroger's presence in the western United States and integrated Fred Meyer's wide-ranging retail format into the Kroger family.

Operations[edit]

Fred Meyer stores are known for their vast size and the wide variety of products they offer. Each store typically includes multiple departments, such as groceries, pharmacy, electronics, home furnishings, clothing, and outdoor equipment. The stores also often feature services like jewelry repair, photo processing, and banking. Fred Meyer places a strong emphasis on customer service and community involvement, participating in various local events and initiatives.

Sustainability and Community Involvement[edit]

Fred Meyer has implemented several sustainability initiatives, focusing on waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable sourcing. The company has made efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by utilizing more energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration, as well as promoting reusable shopping bags. Additionally, Fred Meyer participates in community programs and charity events, contributing to local non-profits and organizations.

Controversies[edit]

Like many large retail chains, Fred Meyer has faced its share of controversies, including labor disputes and concerns over business practices. However, the company has worked to address these issues through negotiations and policy changes.
