Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), formerly known as the National Association of Theatre Nurses (NATN), is a UK-based professional organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of care in the perioperative environment. It provides support, education, and guidance to nurses, healthcare assistants, operating department practitioners, and other healthcare professionals working in the fields of surgery, anaesthesia, and perioperative practice.

History

The Association for Perioperative Practice was established in 1964 as the National Association of Theatre Nurses. Its primary aim was to promote high standards of perioperative nursing care. Over the years, the organization expanded its scope to include all professionals involved in perioperative practice, leading to a change in its name to better reflect its broader membership base.

Mission and Vision

The mission of the AfPP is to lead and support perioperative practitioners in their pursuit of excellence in care delivery. Its vision encompasses a healthcare environment where perioperative care is recognized for its critical role in patient outcomes and where practitioners have access to the resources and support necessary for delivering high-quality care.

Activities and Services

The Association for Perioperative Practice offers a wide range of services and activities to support its members, including:

  • Education and Training: AfPP provides a variety of educational resources, including workshops, seminars, and online courses, to help perioperative practitioners stay current with the latest practices and technologies in their field.
  • Publications: The organization publishes guidelines, standards, and best practice recommendations to assist in the delivery of safe and effective perioperative care. It also publishes a professional journal that features articles on clinical practice, research, and education in perioperative care.
  • Advocacy: AfPP advocates on behalf of perioperative practitioners at the national level, working to influence policy and practice in areas that impact perioperative care.
  • Community and Support: The association fosters a sense of community among perioperative practitioners by providing opportunities for networking, mentorship, and professional development.

Membership

Membership in the Association for Perioperative Practice is open to all professionals working in the perioperative environment, including nurses, operating department practitioners, healthcare assistants, and managers. Members benefit from access to educational resources, professional development opportunities, and a network of peers dedicated to improving perioperative care.

Challenges and Opportunities

The perioperative field faces several challenges, including staffing shortages, increasing complexity of surgical procedures, and the need for continuous professional development. The AfPP plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges by providing support and resources to perioperative practitioners. Additionally, the association has the opportunity to lead innovations in perioperative care and to advocate for policies that ensure the safety and well-being of patients and practitioners alike.
