BS 8599
BS 8599 is a set of British Standards relating to first aid kits in the workplace. These standards specify the contents and quantities of first aid items that should be made available in various workplace environments. The aim of BS 8599 is to ensure that employers provide adequate first aid provisions for their employees, taking into account the specific needs and risks associated with different types of work.
Overview
BS 8599 standards were introduced to update and improve upon the previous guidelines for workplace first aid kits. Prior to the introduction of BS 8599, many first aid kits in the UK were based on a minimum standard that did not account for the wide range of specific hazards present in different work environments. BS 8599 addresses this by categorizing workplace environments into low risk, medium risk, and high risk, and specifying the contents of first aid kits accordingly.
Categories of Risk
- Low Risk: Environments such as offices, shops, or libraries where the likelihood of accidents is minimal.
- Medium Risk: Environments like light industrial settings or warehouses where there are more significant hazards.
- High Risk: Environments such as construction sites or places where hazardous materials are handled, which pose a greater risk of injury.
Contents of Kits
The contents of a BS 8599-compliant first aid kit vary depending on the category of risk associated with the workplace. Common items include various sizes of sterile plasters, sterile eye pads, individually wrapped triangular bandages, safety pins, wound dressings, nitrile disposable gloves, and a resuscitation face shield. The standards also recommend quantities for each item, based on the size of the workforce.
Implementation
Employers are responsible for assessing their workplace to determine the appropriate category of risk and ensuring that sufficient first aid kits are available and accessible. This includes regularly checking the contents of first aid kits to replace used or out-of-date items.
Compliance
While BS 8599 is not a legal requirement, following these standards helps employers to meet their obligations under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. These regulations require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.
Updates and Revisions
BS 8599 standards are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect changes in workplace practices, technology, and feedback from users. Employers should stay informed about any updates to ensure their first aid provisions remain compliant and effective.
