Josef Coresh

Josef Coresh is a prominent figure in the field of epidemiology, particularly known for his contributions to the understanding of kidney disease and its risk factors. He has played a crucial role in developing and refining measures for kidney function, which have been instrumental in both clinical practice and research settings. Born in Israel, Coresh completed his medical degree at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. He later moved to the United States for further training and research opportunities. Coresh earned a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he has remained a key faculty member. His work has significantly impacted the fields of Epidemiology, Public Health, and Nephrology. One of Coresh's notable contributions is his involvement in the development of the CKD-EPI equation, a tool used for estimating the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is a critical indicator of kidney function. This equation has been adopted worldwide and is preferred for its accuracy over the previously used MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) study equation, especially in individuals with preserved renal function. Throughout his career, Coresh has been involved in numerous large-scale epidemiological studies, including the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. His research has focused on the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD), its risk factors, and outcomes. He has published extensively on the subject, contributing valuable insights into the prevention and management of CKD. Coresh's work extends beyond kidney disease. He has also contributed to understanding cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. His interdisciplinary approach, combining epidemiology with clinical medicine, has led to significant advancements in public health strategies and policies aimed at reducing the burden of chronic diseases. In recognition of his contributions, Coresh has received numerous awards and honors. He is a fellow of the American Heart Association and the American Society of Nephrology, among other professional organizations. His leadership in the field has influenced the next generation of researchers and clinicians, making him a respected mentor and collaborator.
