Arsenic tribromide is a chemical compound with the formula AsBr₃. It is a dark red or orange crystalline solid at room temperature and is one of the main bromides of arsenic. Arsenic tribromide is used in the synthesis of organic compounds and in the manufacturing of some types of glass. Due to the presence of arsenic, it is highly toxic and requires careful handling.

Properties

Arsenic tribromide is a covalent compound that melts at 31 °C and boils at 220 °C. It is soluble in water, releasing hydrobromic acid and forming arsenious acid, making the solution strongly acidic. It is also soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and chloroform.

Synthesis

Arsenic tribromide can be synthesized by the direct combination of elemental arsenic and bromine: \[ \text{2 As} + 3 \text{Br}_2 \rightarrow 2 \text{AsBr}_3 \]

This reaction is exothermic and must be conducted with caution due to the highly reactive and toxic nature of the reactants.

Applications

Due to its reactivity, arsenic tribromide is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the addition of bromine across multiple bonds or in the synthesis of other arsenic-containing compounds. It is also used in the production of special types of glass and optical materials, where it acts as a source of arsenic.
