Online shopping is the activity of purchasing goods or services over the Internet. It allows consumers to buy products or services from a seller over the internet using a web browser or a mobile app. The process is known as e-commerce, a broader term that encompasses online shopping as well as other types of online transactions. Online shopping has grown exponentially since its inception, due to its convenience, the wide range of available products, and the ability to easily compare prices and read customer reviews.

The history of online shopping dates back to the 1970s when ARPANET was used to arrange a cannabis sale between students at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an early example of electronic commerce. The first secure retail transaction over the Web was either by NetMarket or Internet Shopping Network in 1994. Shortly thereafter, Amazon.com launched its online shopping site in 1995 and eBay was also introduced in 1995.
