Reinecke's salt
Reinecke's salt, formally known as ammonium tetrafluoro(dioxoethylene)diaquachromate(III), is a coordination compound with the formula NH4[Cr(C2O4)2(OH)2]. It is a red crystalline solid that is soluble in water and alcohol. Reinecke's salt plays a significant role in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the detection and determination of certain organic compounds, particularly amines and alkaloids.
Properties[edit]
Reinecke's salt is characterized by its red color and crystalline structure. It is soluble in water and alcohol, making it useful in various chemical reactions and analytical procedures. The compound is stable under normal conditions but decomposes upon heating, releasing toxic fumes of ammonia and chromium compounds.
Synthesis[edit]
Reinecke's salt is synthesized through the reaction of chromium(III) chloride with ammonium fluoride and potassium oxalate in an aqueous solution. The reaction proceeds under acidic conditions, typically with the addition of acetic acid, to facilitate the formation of the complex. The product is then crystallized from the solution, yielding the characteristic red crystals of Reinecke's salt.
Applications[edit]
The primary application of Reinecke's salt is in analytical chemistry, where it serves as a reagent for the detection and quantification of various organic compounds. It is particularly useful in the analysis of amines and alkaloids, where it forms insoluble complexes with these compounds, allowing for their precipitation and subsequent identification or quantification.
Safety[edit]
Handling Reinecke's salt requires caution due to its toxicity and the potential release of harmful fumes upon decomposition. Appropriate safety measures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adequate ventilation, are essential when working with this compound.
