Kabardino-Balkaria is a federal subject of Russia (a republic), located in the North Caucasus. The republic is situated in the North Caucasus mountains, with plains in the northern part. It is part of the North Caucasian Federal District and shares borders with Stavropol Krai, North Ossetia–Alania, Karachay–Cherkessia, and the Republic of Georgia.

Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, is located in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Geography[edit]

Kabardino-Balkaria includes two major river systems: the Terek River and the Malka River. The republic's largest lake, Lake Tambukan, is located in the northeast. The republic is home to the two highest peaks in Europe, Mount Elbrus and Dykh-Tau.
