Eumycetoma

Causes

The most common causative organisms are the fungi Madurella mycetomatis, Leptosphaeria senegalensis, and Acremonium falciforme, and the bacteria Actinomadura madurae, Nocardia brasiliensis, and Streptomyces somaliensis. The disease is usually contracted through a minor injury or puncture wound, which allows the organisms to enter the body.

Symptoms

The main symptom of eumycetoma is the presence of small nodules under the skin, which can develop into larger abscesses and ulcers. These lesions are typically painless, but can cause significant disfigurement and disability. Other symptoms may include swelling, inflammation, and discharge of a grainy material from the lesions.

Diagnosis
