Triangles of the Neck

The Triangles of the Neck are anatomical regions of the neck that are divided by the sternocleidomastoid muscle. They are used to help identify the location of structures in the neck. The neck is divided into two main triangles: the anterior triangle and the posterior triangle.

Anterior Triangle

The Anterior Triangle is located on the front of the neck. It is bordered by the midline of the neck, the lower border of the mandible, and the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The Anterior Triangle is further divided into four smaller triangles: the submental triangle, the submandibular triangle, the carotid triangle, and the muscular triangle.

Submental Triangle

The Submental Triangle is located under the chin. It is bordered by the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, the hyoid bone, and the midline of the neck.

Submandibular Triangle

The Submandibular Triangle, also known as the Digastric Triangle, is located under the jaw. It is bordered by the anterior and posterior bellies of the digastric muscle and the lower border of the mandible.

Carotid Triangle

The Carotid Triangle is located on the side of the neck. It is bordered by the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the omohyoid muscle, and the posterior belly of the digastric muscle.

Muscular Triangle

The Muscular Triangle is located on the front of the neck. It is bordered by the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle, and the midline of the neck.

Posterior Triangle

The Posterior Triangle is located on the side of the neck. It is bordered by the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the trapezius muscle, and the clavicle. The Posterior Triangle is further divided into two smaller triangles: the occipital triangle and the subclavian triangle.

Occipital Triangle

The Occipital Triangle is located on the side of the neck. It is bordered by the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the trapezius muscle, and the omohyoid muscle.

Subclavian Triangle

The Subclavian Triangle, also known as the Clavicular Triangle or Omoclavicular Triangle, is located on the side of the neck. It is bordered by the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the clavicle, and the omohyoid muscle.
