History
Vyera Pharmaceuticals, originally known as Turing Pharmaceuticals, was founded by Martin Shkreli in 2015. Shkreli, a controversial figure in the pharmaceutical industry, was later convicted of securities fraud and sentenced to seven years in prison. Following Shkreli's conviction, the company was renamed Vyera Pharmaceuticals.
Products
Vyera Pharmaceuticals' most well-known product is Daraprim, a medication used to treat toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can cause life-threatening complications in people with weakened immune systems. In 2015, the company sparked controversy when it increased the price of Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per pill overnight.
Controversies
Vyera Pharmaceuticals has been involved in several controversies, most notably the Daraprim price hike. The company has also been accused of anti-competitive practices, including preventing generic versions of Daraprim from entering the market. In 2020, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Vyera Pharmaceuticals, alleging that the company had violated antitrust laws.
