Ruth Arnon
Ruth Arnon is an Israeli biochemist, immunologist, and the Paul Ehrlich Professor of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute of Science. She is known for her significant contributions to the fields of vaccine development and autoimmune diseases, particularly for her co-development of the Multiple Sclerosis drug Copaxone.
Early life and education
Arnon was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1933. She received her B.Sc. in Chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1955, and her M.Sc. in Biochemistry in 1958. She completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1960.
Career
Arnon joined the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1960 as a researcher, where she has remained throughout her career. She served as the Dean of Biology (1985-1988), Vice President (1988-1997), and was appointed the Paul Ehrlich Professor of Immunology in 1985.
Research
Arnon's research has focused on the immune system, specifically the development of vaccines and the treatment of autoimmune diseases. She is best known for her work on the development of Copaxone, a drug used to treat Multiple Sclerosis. She has also conducted significant research on Influenza vaccines, and was instrumental in the development of a universal flu vaccine.
Awards and recognition
Arnon has received numerous awards and recognition for her work, including the Israel Prize in Medicine (2001), the Wolf Prize in Medicine (2003), and the Rothschild Prize in Biology (2006). She is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the United States National Academy of Sciences, and the European Molecular Biology Organization.
