Mebeverine
Mebeverine is a type of medication used primarily to treat the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and similar conditions. It is a type of antispasmodic drug, which works by relaxing the muscles in the gut and thereby reducing the pain and discomfort associated with IBS.
Pharmacology[edit]
Mebeverine is a musculotropic antispasmodic drug without atropic side-effects whose major therapeutic role is in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. It is also indicated for treatment of gastrointestinal spasm secondary to organic disorder. It works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of the intestines. This relieves painful muscle spasms in the gut and reduces related symptoms like colicky abdominal pain and cramps, and bowel spasms.
Medical uses[edit]
Mebeverine is used to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and related conditions. These symptoms may include abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhea, constipation and bloating. It is also used to treat other conditions that involve spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, such as chronic irritable colon, spastic constipation, mucous colitis and spastic colitis.
Side effects[edit]
Like all medication, Mebeverine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some of the most common side effects include skin rash and other allergic reactions, indigestion, and slowed heart rate.
