British Dental Association (BDA) is a professional association and registered trade union for dentists in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1880 and represents over 22,000 dentists working in both general practice and hospitals, in community and university settings, in the armed forces and in corporate bodies.

History

The British Dental Association was established in 1880 by Sir John Tomes. The association was created to advance the interests of the dental profession and promote dental health for all. The BDA Museum, which has the largest collection of dental material in Britain, was established in 1919.

Structure and Function

The BDA is governed by an elected board of directors, known as the Principal Executive Committee (PEC). The PEC is responsible for the strategic direction of the BDA. The association provides advice and support to its members on all aspects of dentistry including clinical practice, employment and education.

Services

The BDA offers a range of services to its members including advice on professional and legal issues, information and support on clinical and business issues, and access to a library and online resources. It also provides opportunities for professional development through courses and events.

Campaigns

The BDA campaigns on a range of issues affecting dentists and dentistry. These include dental health, access to services, the working conditions of dentists, and the regulation of dentistry.
