An oilseed press is a machine that physically extracts oil from raw or cooked seeds. This process is known as oil extraction. History

Types of Oilseed Presses

There are two main types of oilseed presses: screw presses and hydraulic presses.

Screw Presses

Screw presses, also known as expeller presses, use a screw-like shaft to crush the oilseed and force the oil out. This type of press can be used for a wide variety of oilseeds including soybeans, sunflower seeds, rapeseed, and peanuts.

Hydraulic Presses

Hydraulic presses use high pressure to squeeze the oil out of the seed. These presses are typically used for smaller batches and higher quality oils, as they can extract more oil and do so at a lower temperature, preserving the quality of the oil.

Process

The process of oil extraction using an oilseed press involves several steps. First, the seeds are cleaned and prepared. This may involve dehulling, or removing the outer shell of the seed, and heating the seeds to increase the efficiency of oil extraction. The prepared seeds are then fed into the press, where they are crushed and the oil is extracted. The remaining solid material, known as oil cake, can be used as a high-protein animal feed.

Applications

Oilseed presses are used in a variety of industries. In the food industry, they are used to produce cooking oils and ingredients for processed foods. In the biofuel industry, oilseed presses are used to produce oils that can be converted into biodiesel. They are also used in the cosmetics industry to produce oils for use in skincare and haircare products.
