Tokyo is the capital city of Japan, and one of the 47 prefectures in the country. It is the most populous metropolitan area in the world, boasting a population of over 37 million people.

History

Tokyo was originally a small fishing village named Edo. The city became prominent in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. It was renamed Tokyo (meaning "Eastern Capital") in 1868 when the Emperor Meiji moved his seat from the old capital of Kyoto.

Geography

Tokyo is located on the eastern coast of the island of Honshu, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east. The Tokyo Bay lies to the south of the city. Tokyo is made up of 23 special wards, 26 cities, 5 towns, and 8 villages.

Economy

Tokyo has the largest metropolitan economy in the world. It is a major international finance center, housing the headquarters of several of the world's largest investment banks and insurance companies. The city is also Japan's largest domestic and international hub for rail and ground transportation.

Culture

Tokyo is known for its contemporary architecture, and is home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is also famous for its numerous museums. Tokyo's food scene is renowned worldwide, and it has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city.

Education

Tokyo is a major center of education, research and human development. The city is home to several of Japan's most prestigious universities, including the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Sports

Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics and the 2020 Summer Olympics. The city has several major sports venues, including the Tokyo Dome and Nippon Budokan.
