Quarters is a term with multiple meanings and applications across various fields. It can refer to a type of coin, a section of a city, a type of housing, or a period of time in academics or business.

Quarters as Coins[edit]

In the United States, a quarter is a coin worth 25 cents, or one-fourth of a dollar. The quarter has been produced since 1796 and is made of a copper and nickel blend. The current design features the profile of George Washington on the obverse side and various designs on the reverse side as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters program.

Quarters in Urban Planning[edit]

In urban planning, a quarter is a section of a city. The term is used in many cities around the world, including Paris, where the city is divided into 20 administrative districts known as "quarters" or "arrondissements". Each quarter has its own unique character and attractions.

Quarters as Housing[edit]

Quarters can also refer to housing, particularly in a military context. In the military, quarters are the place where soldiers live. This can range from a simple barracks to more complex housing arrangements. Quarters can also refer to the living arrangements provided to domestic staff in a large household.

Quarters in Academics and Business[edit]

In academics and business, a quarter is a period of time equal to one-fourth of a year. In academics, many universities operate on a quarter system, with the academic year divided into four quarters. In business, a quarter refers to a three-month period on the financial calendar that is used for reporting earnings and dividends.
