Honor Frost (28 October 1917 – 12 September 2010) was a pioneering underwater archaeologist and one of the first women to dive and excavate underwater sites. She is best known for her work in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in Lebanon and Cyprus.

Early life and education

Frost was born in Cyprus to a British father and an Australian mother. After her parents' death, she moved to London, where she studied at the Central School of Art and later at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Career

Frost's interest in underwater archaeology began when she learned to dive in the early 1950s. She worked with Frederic Dumas, a pioneer in the field, and later with George Bass, who is considered the father of underwater archaeology.

In 1960, Frost led the first archaeological expedition to survey the ancient harbours of Sidon, in Lebanon. She also led excavations at the Phoenician port of Tyre and the Roman port of Caesarea Maritima.

Frost was a founding member of the Council for Nautical Archaeology and the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. She also established the Honor Frost Foundation, which provides grants for underwater archaeology in the Mediterranean.

Legacy

Frost's work has had a significant impact on the field of underwater archaeology. She is remembered for her pioneering work and for her efforts to promote the preservation of underwater cultural heritage.
