Gwynedd, Pennsylvania is a U.S. unincorporated community located in Montgomery County, in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The community is part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History[edit]

Gwynedd was founded by Welsh Quakers in 1698. The name "Gwynedd" means "White Land" in Welsh, and it is believed to have been named after the ancient Kingdom of Gwynedd in Wales. The community has a rich history, with many of its buildings and structures dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Geography[edit]

Gwynedd is located in the southeastern part of Montgomery County, approximately 20 miles north of Philadelphia. The community is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. It is served by the North Wales SEPTA station, which provides access to Philadelphia and other parts of the region.

Education[edit]

Gwynedd is served by the Wissahickon School District, which operates several elementary schools, a middle school, and Wissahickon High School. The community is also home to Gwynedd Mercy University, a private Catholic university founded in 1948.

Notable people[edit]

Several notable individuals have ties to Gwynedd, including William Logan Fisher, a prominent 19th-century industrialist and philanthropist, and Frances Anne Wister, a leading figure in the preservation of historic sites in Philadelphia.
