Oreland, Pennsylvania
Oreland is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Springfield Township, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 Census, the population of Oreland was 5,678.
History[edit]
Oreland, as part of Springfield Township, was originally settled by the Quakers in the late 17th century. The area was primarily used for farming until the late 19th century when the railroad was built and Oreland became a popular location for Philadelphia residents to build summer homes.
Geography[edit]
Oreland is located at 40°6′52″N 75°10′48″W (40.114444, -75.180000). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²), all of it land.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2010 Census, there were 5,678 people, 2,114 households, and 1,492 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,785.3 people per square mile (1,460.4/km²).
Education[edit]
Oreland is served by the Springfield Township School District. The district operates Springfield Township High School, Springfield Township Middle School, and Enfield Elementary School.
Transportation[edit]
Oreland is served by SEPTA at the Oreland station on the Lansdale/Doylestown Line.
Notable people[edit]
- Bill Cosby, comedian and actor, lived in Oreland during the early 1960s.
- Reggie Jackson, Hall of Fame baseball player, lived in Oreland during his time with the Philadelphia Athletics.
