Knockando distillery

Knockando Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Knockando, Moray, Scotland. The distillery is owned by Diageo, a British multinational alcoholic beverages company.

History

The Knockando distillery was established in 1898 by John Tytler Thomson, a company based in Edinburgh. The distillery was built during the whisky boom of the late 19th century, which saw a significant increase in the number of distilleries in Scotland. However, the distillery was closed shortly after its establishment due to the Pattison crash, a financial crisis in the whisky industry.

In 1904, the distillery was purchased by W & A Gilbey, a wine and spirits merchant from London. Under the new ownership, the distillery resumed production and has been in continuous operation since then. In 1962, W & A Gilbey merged with United Wine Traders to form International Distillers & Vintners (IDV). IDV was later acquired by Grand Metropolitan, which merged with Guinness to form Diageo in 1997.

Production

Knockando distillery produces a range of single malt Scotch whiskies. The distillery uses traditional methods of whisky production, including copper pot stills and oak casks for maturation. The water used in the production is sourced from the Cardnach spring, located in the nearby Ben Rinnes mountain.

The distillery's core range includes the Knockando 12 Year Old, 18 Year Old, and 21 Year Old. In addition to the core range, the distillery also releases special editions and limited releases.

Visitor Experience

Knockando distillery offers guided tours for visitors, which include a tour of the production facilities and a tasting of the distillery's whiskies. The distillery also has a visitor centre, where visitors can learn more about the history and production of Knockando whisky.
