Kalenjin people
Kalenjin people are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting the Rift Valley Province in Kenya. They are estimated to number a little over 6 million individuals as of 2019, and are divided into eight culturally and linguistically related tribes: Kipsigis, Nandi, Tugen, Keiyo, Marakwet, Pokot, Sabaot, and Terik.
History
The Kalenjin are believed to have migrated to their present location from the Sudan region around the 2nd century AD. They were primarily pastoralists, but also practiced subsistence farming. The Kalenjin gained prominence in the 19th century during the colonial period when they resisted British rule, notably in the Nandi Resistance.
Culture
The Kalenjin are known for their distinct cultural practices such as the circumcision ceremony, which is a rite of passage for both boys and girls. They also have a rich oral tradition, with stories, proverbs, and songs passed down through generations. The Kalenjin are also renowned for their prowess in long-distance running, with numerous Olympic and world champions hailing from this community.
Language
The Kalenjin speak the Kalenjin language, which is part of the Nilotic language family. There are several dialects of the language, each associated with a different tribe. The language is widely spoken in the Rift Valley and is taught in schools.
Economy
The economy of the Kalenjin people is primarily based on agriculture and livestock farming. They grow crops such as maize, beans, and potatoes, and rear cattle, sheep, and goats. In recent years, some Kalenjin have ventured into business and other professions.
Religion
Traditionally, the Kalenjin practiced African Traditional Religion, worshipping a supreme deity known as Asis (the Sun). With the advent of Christianity and Islam, many Kalenjin have converted to these religions, although traditional beliefs still persist.
Notable Kalenjin
Notable individuals of Kalenjin descent include former Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi, world-renowned athletes such as Kipchoge Keino and Paul Tergat, and Nobel laureate Richard Leakey.
