Nobuyuki Idei

Nobuyuki Idei (born November 22, 1937) is a Japanese business executive who served as the Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sony Corporation from 1999 to 2005. Idei was instrumental in transforming Sony into a global electronics and entertainment company.

Early Life and Education

Nobuyuki Idei was born in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from Waseda University in 1960 with a degree in Political Science and Economics.

Career

After graduation, Idei joined Sony Corporation, a multinational conglomerate corporation known for its electronic products. He held various positions within the company before becoming President and Representative Director in 1995.

In 1999, Idei was appointed as the Chairman and Group CEO of Sony. During his tenure, he led the company through a period of significant change and growth. He was instrumental in the development and launch of several successful Sony products, including the PlayStation 2 and the VAIO personal computer.

Idei also played a key role in expanding Sony's entertainment business. He oversaw the acquisition of film and music companies, including Columbia Pictures and Epic Records, which helped Sony become a global leader in the entertainment industry.

In 2005, Idei stepped down as Chairman and CEO of Sony. He was succeeded by Sir Howard Stringer, who became the first non-Japanese to head the company.
