Crowd Cow is an online marketplace that allows consumers to buy shares of beef, pork, chicken, and other types of meat directly from small farms and ranches. The company was founded in 2015 by Ethan Lowry and Joe Heitzeberg, with the aim of providing a more transparent alternative to traditional meat supply chains.

History

Ethan Lowry and Joe Heitzeberg founded Crowd Cow in 2015. The two entrepreneurs were inspired to start the company after a conversation with a friend who had purchased an entire cow from a local farm. They realized that many consumers were interested in buying high-quality, sustainably raised meat, but didn't have the means or desire to buy in such large quantities.

Crowd Cow operates by allowing consumers to "crowdfund" a cow, or other animal, from a specific farm. Once enough shares have been sold, the animal is butchered, and the meat is shipped directly to the consumers. This model allows consumers to know exactly where their meat is coming from, and supports small farms and ranches that might not otherwise have access to a large market.

Business Model

Crowd Cow's business model is based on the concept of crowdfunding. Instead of purchasing meat from large, industrial farms, consumers can buy shares of an animal from a specific, small-scale farm. Once enough shares have been sold, the animal is butchered and the meat is shipped directly to the consumers. This model allows consumers to have more transparency and control over where their food comes from.

In addition to beef, Crowd Cow also sells pork, chicken, and seafood. The company sources its products from farms and ranches that follow sustainable and humane practices.

Reception

Crowd Cow has been well received by both consumers and the media. The company has been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Forbes, and TechCrunch, and has been praised for its commitment to transparency and sustainability.
