HHIP or Hedgehog Interacting Protein is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HHIP gene. It is involved in the Hedgehog signaling pathway, which is critical for proper embryonic development. Mutations in this gene have been associated with several diseases, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Lung Cancer.

Function[edit]

The HHIP gene encodes a protein that is capable of interacting with members of the Hedgehog family. The Hedgehog signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the growth, patterning, and morphogenesis of many different tissues and organs during embryonic development. The protein encoded by the HHIP gene can inhibit the signaling activity of the Hedgehog proteins, thereby controlling the extent of their effects on the developing organism.

Clinical Significance[edit]

Several studies have found associations between variations in the HHIP gene and susceptibility to COPD and lung cancer. These findings suggest that the HHIP gene may play a role in the development of these diseases. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms underlying these associations.
