Dextrose 50% in water, also known as D50W, is a form of dextrose and is used to treat hypoglycemia, insulin shock, and other conditions that require a rapid increase in blood sugar. It is a carbohydrate and a source of calories.

Uses

D50W is used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), insulin shock, and other conditions that require a rapid increase in blood sugar. It is also used as a source of calories in patients who cannot eat. D50W is sometimes used in combination with other medications to treat high blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia).

Administration

D50W is usually administered by a healthcare professional. It is given by injection into a vein, usually in the arm. The dosage is based on the patient's medical condition and response to treatment.

Side Effects

Possible side effects of D50W include nausea, vomiting, and thrombophlebitis (inflammation of a vein). If these side effects persist or worsen, the patient should notify their healthcare professional.

Precautions

Before using D50W, the patient should tell their healthcare professional if they have any allergies, especially to corn or corn products. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Interactions

D50W may interact with other medications, including insulin and diuretics. The patient should tell their healthcare professional about all the products they use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away.

Notes

Do not share this medication with others. It is against the law.

Missed Dose

If the patient misses a dose, they should take it as soon as they remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature. Do not freeze. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
