TerraPower

TerraPower is a nuclear reactor design company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, United States. TerraPower is developing a class of nuclear fast reactors called the Traveling Wave Reactor (TWR).

History

TerraPower was founded by Bill Gates, former Microsoft chairman, and Nathan Myhrvold, former Microsoft CTO, in 2006. The company's primary goal is to provide the world with a more affordable, secure, and environmentally friendly form of nuclear energy.

Technology

TerraPower is developing a type of nuclear reactor known as the Traveling Wave Reactor (TWR). The TWR is a Generation IV reactor that uses depleted uranium as fuel, which is more abundant and less expensive than the enriched uranium used in most current nuclear reactors. The TWR can theoretically run for decades without refueling.

Projects

TerraPower has several ongoing projects, including the development of a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). The company is also working on a project called the Natrium Reactor, which combines a sodium-cooled fast reactor with a molten salt energy storage system.

Partnerships

TerraPower has formed partnerships with several organizations, including GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, to develop its reactor designs. In 2021, TerraPower was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to receive funding for the demonstration of its Natrium Reactor.
