Methorphan
Methorphan is a type of opioid and antitussive drug that is used in many over-the-counter cough and cold medications. It is available in two isomeric forms, dextromethorphan (DXM) and levomethorphan (Levo), each of which has different effects and uses.
Pharmacology[edit]
Methorphan comes in two forms: dextromethorphan and levomethorphan. Dextromethorphan is a noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist and also acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Levomethorphan is an opioid analgesic.
Medical uses[edit]
Methorphan is primarily used as a cough suppressant in many over-the-counter cold and cough medicines. It is also used for pain relief in certain medical situations.
Side effects[edit]
Like all medications, methorphan can cause side effects. These can include dizziness, nausea, and in some cases, hallucinations. It is important to use this medication as directed by a healthcare professional to minimize the risk of side effects.
