PubChem is a free-to-use database of chemical molecules and their activities against biological assays. The system is maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a component of the National Library of Medicine, which is part of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH). PubChem is a vital resource for researchers in the fields of chemistry and biology.

Overview

PubChem consists of three dynamic databases: PubChem Substance, PubChem Compound, and PubChem BioAssay. PubChem Substance provides information on the composition of chemical samples. PubChem Compound contains validated chemical depiction information that is provided to describe substances in PubChem Substance. PubChem BioAssay contains bioactivity screens of chemical substances described in PubChem Substance.

History

PubChem was released in 2004 by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The release was met with controversy from the American Chemical Society (ACS) due to potential competition with the ACS's Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS).

Access

PubChem data is accessible in multiple ways: through PubChem's website, through NCBI's Entrez search and retrieval system, and through web services and APIs.
