Nitromemantine
Nitromemantine is a derivative of Memantine with enhanced neuroprotective effects. It is a second-generation NMDA receptor antagonist that is designed to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Nitromemantine works by blocking extra-synaptic NMDA receptors, which are associated with neurodegeneration.
Mechanism of Action
Nitromemantine is a derivative of memantine, which is a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist. Nitromemantine has a nitro group added to the memantine molecule, which enhances its neuroprotective effects. The nitro group allows nitromemantine to preferentially block extra-synaptic NMDA receptors, which are associated with neurodegeneration, while sparing synaptic NMDA receptors, which are necessary for normal neuronal function.
