A Requirement is a specification that identifies what a particular system or system component must do or be to satisfy a customer's needs. It is a documented need of what a particular product or service should be or do. It is used in the fields of engineering, software development, and other disciplines to guide the design, development, and management of products and services.

Types of Requirements

There are several types of requirements that may be defined during the requirements engineering process. These include:

• Functional Requirements: These define the basic system behaviour. Essentially, they are what the system does or must not do.
• Non-functional Requirements: These are requirements that specify criteria that can be used to judge the operation of a system, rather than specific behaviours.
• Domain Requirements: These are the requirements that arise from the application domain of the system, rather than from the needs of users.
• User Requirements: These are statements, in a natural language plus diagrams, of what services the system is expected to provide to system users and the constraints under which it must operate.
• System Requirements: These set out the system's functions, services and operational constraints in detail.

Requirement Engineering

Requirement Engineering is the process of defining, documenting and maintaining requirements. It is a part of systems and software engineering and involves communication between the system users and the developers. Requirement Engineering helps in identifying the requirements and ensuring that they are met.

Requirement Management

Requirement Management is the process of managing changes to the system requirements. It involves recording and maintaining the requirements in a database and ensuring that they are met throughout the system lifecycle.
