URAC, formerly known as the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, is a nonprofit organization that promotes healthcare quality through its accreditation, education, and measurement programs. URAC offers a wide range of quality benchmarking programs and services that model the rapid changes in the healthcare system and provide a symbol of excellence for organizations to validate their commitment to quality and accountability.

History

URAC was founded in 1990 under the name Utilization Review Accreditation Commission. The organization was originally created to ensure the quality and fairness of utilization review, an area of healthcare that was rapidly growing at the time. Over the years, URAC has expanded its scope to include a wide range of healthcare services.

Accreditation Programs

URAC offers accreditation programs in several areas of healthcare, including health plans, pharmacy benefit management, provider networks, healthcare management, health websites, and case management. These programs are designed to help healthcare organizations demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability.

Standards

URAC's standards are developed by a committee of healthcare industry experts. The standards are designed to ensure that healthcare organizations are providing high-quality care and services. The standards cover a wide range of areas, including organizational structure, staff qualifications, service delivery, patient safety, and quality improvement.

Recognition

URAC is recognized by state and federal regulatory agencies, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). URAC's accreditation is considered a mark of quality and is often required by insurers and other payers.
