Nunavut
Nunavut is the largest and northernmost territory of Canada. It was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, via the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act, though the boundaries had been drawn in 1993. The creation of Nunavut resulted in the first major change to Canada's political map since the incorporation of the new province of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1949.
Geography
Nunavut covers 1,936,113 square kilometres of land and 157,077 square kilometres of water in Northern Canada, making it the fifth-largest country subdivision in the world. The territory includes part of the mainland, most of the Arctic Archipelago, and all of the islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay, and Ungava Bay.
Demographics
As of the 2016 census, the population of Nunavut was 35,944, a 12.7% increase from 2011. In 2006, 24.5% of the population was non-Aboriginal. More than half of the population lives in the capital city, Iqaluit.
Economy
The economy of Nunavut is driven by natural resources, including minerals, oil and gas. The territory has considerable resources in gold, diamonds, and iron ore. The largest employer in the territory is the Government of Nunavut, followed by the mining industry.
Culture
The culture of Nunavut is deeply rooted in the Inuit way of life, with the Inuit people making up about 85% of the population. The territory has a vibrant arts scene, with numerous Inuit artists, musicians, and filmmakers gaining national and international recognition.
Government
Nunavut operates under a consensus government within the framework of a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The Monarch of Canada is the head of state, and the Premier of Nunavut is the head of government.
