Ulcerate

Ulcerate is a technical death metal band from Auckland, New Zealand. The band was formed in 2000 and has released five studio albums to date. Their music is characterized by a complex and dissonant style, which has earned them critical acclaim.

History

Ulcerate was formed in 2000 by drummer Jamie Saint Merat and guitarist Michael Hoggard. The band's initial lineup was completed with the addition of vocalist Mark Seeney and bassist Phil Smathers. Seeney was replaced by Ben Read in 2003, who was in turn replaced by current vocalist Paul Kelland in 2006. Smathers left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Kelland, who took over bass duties in addition to vocals.

The band's debut album, Of Fracture and Failure, was released in 2007. This was followed by Everything Is Fire in 2009, The Destroyers of All in 2011, Vermis in 2013, and Shrines of Paralysis in 2016.

Musical style and influences

Ulcerate's music is characterized by a complex and dissonant style, which has been described as "a punishing blend of technical death metal and blackened post-metal". The band's sound has been compared to that of Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, and Neurosis. Their lyrics often deal with themes of nihilism, existentialism, and anti-religion.
