William Donald Kelley
William Donald Kelley (1 November 1925 – 30 January 2005) was an orthodontist who developed a controversial alternative cancer treatment called Kelley Metabolic Therapy. This therapy is based on the belief that cancer is a symptom of inadequate and imbalanced nutrition and can be cured by a specialized diet and supplement regimen.
Early Life and Career
Kelley was born in Kansas, United States. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in dental surgery. He later specialized in orthodontics and established a successful practice in Texas.
Kelley Metabolic Therapy
In the 1960s, Kelley was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Unwilling to undergo conventional treatment, he developed his own regimen, which he claimed led to his recovery. This regimen, later known as Kelley Metabolic Therapy, involves a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, along with high doses of pancreatic enzymes and other supplements. It also includes procedures such as coffee enemas and liver flushes.
Despite Kelley's claims of success, his therapy has been widely criticized by the medical community. Multiple reviews of his treatment have found no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness, and it is considered a form of alternative medicine that may pose serious risks to patients.
Controversies
Kelley's therapy has been the subject of numerous controversies. In 1970, he was convicted of practicing medicine without a license. His book, One Answer to Cancer, was banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for making unsubstantiated health claims. Despite these controversies, Kelley continued to promote his therapy until his death in 2005.
Legacy
Despite the controversies surrounding Kelley and his therapy, he has had a lasting impact on the field of alternative medicine. His ideas have influenced a number of other alternative cancer treatments, and his book remains in print.
