Swizzle stick
Swizzle Stick
A Swizzle Stick is a small stick used to stir drinks. The original swizzle sticks were created in the 18th century at a rum plantation in the West Indies. They were used to stir up Bermudian cocktails called Rum Swizzles and were made from the branch of the Quararibea turbinata (or "Swizzlestick Tree"). Today, they are commonly made of plastic and are often adorned with an ornamental top.
History
The swizzle stick was first used in the West Indies during the 18th century. It was originally a short branch from the Quararibea turbinata tree, which is also known as the "Swizzlestick Tree". The branch was trimmed with separated "prongs" at one end and was used to stir a drink called a Rum Swizzle. The stirring would cause the drink to become frothy.
In the 20th century, the swizzle stick started to be made from plastic and was used in a variety of drinks, not just the Rum Swizzle. The plastic swizzle stick often had an ornamental top, which could be anything from a small figure to a company logo.
Modern Usage
Today, swizzle sticks are used in a variety of settings, from casual parties to formal events. They are often used in cocktails, coffee, and other beverages that require stirring. Some swizzle sticks are even collectible, with people collecting swizzle sticks from different bars, restaurants, and events.
