Definition[edit]

Open source refers to a type of software whose source code is available to the general public, meaning anyone can view, modify, and distribute the code. This stands in contrast to proprietary software, which is owned by a company or individual and is not publicly available.

WikiMD's goal[edit]

The goal of Wikimd is to create Medical information in an encyclopedia format that is freely available. The license we use grants free access to our content in the same sense as free software is licensed freely.

Copyleft[edit]

This principle is known as copyleft. That is to say, Wikimd content can be copied, modified, and redistributed so long as the new version grants the same freedoms to others and acknowledges the authors of the Wikimd article used (a direct link back to the article satisfies our author credit requirement). Wikimd articles therefore will remain free forever for non-commercial use (CC BY SA, see below) and can be used by anybody subject to certain restrictions (no commercial use except with written permission), most of which serve to ensure that freedom.

To fulfill the above goals, the text contained in Wikimd is licensed to the public under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). The full text of this license is at Wikimd:Text of the GNU Free Documentation License.
