Minority

Minority is a term that refers to a group of people who are different from the larger group in a society, often due to their race, religion, language, or political beliefs. The term is often used in a sociological context to describe groups that are marginalized or discriminated against.

Definition

A minority is a sociological group that does not make up a statistically dominant percentage of the total population of a given society. A sociological minority is not necessarily a numerical minority — it may include any group that is subnormal with respect to a dominant group in terms of social status, education, employment, wealth and political power.

Types of Minorities

There are several types of minorities, including racial, ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities.

• Racial minority: A group of people who are identified by their physical characteristics, such as skin color, hair texture, and facial features.

• Ethnic minority: A group of people who share a common cultural heritage, including language, religion, and traditions.

• Religious minority: A group of people who practice a religion that is different from the majority religion in a society.

• Linguistic minority: A group of people who speak a language that is different from the majority language in a society.

Minority Rights

Minority rights are the normal individual rights as applied to members of racial, ethnic, class, religious, linguistic or gender and sexual minorities, and also the collective rights accorded to any minority group.
