John MacCulloch

John MacCulloch (1773 – 21 August 1835) was a Scottish geologist and physician. He was born in Guernsey, and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1793. He was appointed to the Geological Survey of Great Britain in 1814, and was its first president. He is best known for his work on the geology of Scotland, and for his early use of geological maps.

Early life and education

John MacCulloch was born in Guernsey in 1773. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated in 1793.

Career

After graduating, MacCulloch worked as a physician. In 1814, he was appointed to the Geological Survey of Great Britain, where he served as its first president. He is best known for his work on the geology of Scotland, and for his early use of geological maps.

Death

MacCulloch died on 21 August 1835.

Legacy

MacCulloch's work on the geology of Scotland and his use of geological maps have had a lasting impact on the field of geology.
