Henry Stubbe

Henry Stubbe (1632–1676) was an English physician, polemicist and scholar. He is best known for his work in the field of medicine and his writings on various subjects, including religion, politics, and history. Stubbe was a strong advocate for the use of reason in religious debates and was a vocal critic of the intolerance and dogmatism he saw in his society.

Early Life and Education

Henry Stubbe was born in Partney, Lincolnshire, in 1632. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he distinguished himself as a scholar. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1652 and a Master of Arts degree in 1656. He later studied medicine and received his Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1659.

Career

Stubbe began his career as a physician in Warwick, where he gained a reputation for his skill and knowledge. He was also known for his writings on various subjects, including religion, politics, and history. His works were often controversial and provoked much debate.

Among his most notable works are The Rise and Progress of Mahometanism (1671), in which he presented a sympathetic view of Islam, and A Light Shining out of Darkness (1656), in which he defended the use of reason in religious debates.

Death and Legacy

Stubbe died in Warwick in 1676. His writings continue to be studied by scholars for their insights into the intellectual and religious debates of his time.
