Hacking
Hacking refers to the act of exploiting system vulnerabilities and compromising security controls to gain unauthorized or inappropriate access to the system resources. It involves modifying system or application features to achieve a goal that differs from the original purpose.
Types of Hacking[edit]
There are three main types of hacking: Ethical Hacking, Grey Hat Hacking, and Black Hat Hacking.
Ethical Hacking[edit]
Ethical Hacking, also known as penetration testing or white hat hacking, involves the use of hacking skills for defensive purposes. Ethical hackers use their skills to help improve system security by discovering vulnerabilities before malicious hackers (black hat hackers) can detect and exploit them.
Grey Hat Hacking[edit]
Grey Hat Hacking is a blend of both black hat and white hat hacking. A grey hat hacker may surf the internet and hack into a computer system for the sole purpose of notifying the administrator that their system has a security defect.
Black Hat Hacking[edit]
Black Hat Hacking is the act of compromising the security of a system without the owner's consent. Black hat hackers are often malicious and their actions can lead to financial losses, data theft, and other major disruptions.
Hacking Techniques[edit]
There are several techniques that hackers use to gain unauthorized access to systems. Some of the most common hacking techniques include Phishing, Password Cracking, Virus, Trojan & Worms, Keylogger, Denial of Service (DoS/DDoS), Waterhole attacks, Fake WAP, and Eavesdropping.
Prevention[edit]
Preventing hacking involves a combination of system security measures and user awareness. Some of the most effective prevention methods include Firewalls, Antivirus Software, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Secure Passwords, and User Awareness and Training.
