History

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium that infects the stomach lining and is a major cause of various gastrointestinal diseases, including gastritis, peptic ulcers, and even stomach cancer. The discovery of H. pylori and its association with these diseases has revolutionized the field of gastroenterology. Concomitant therapy involved combining a PPI, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole or tinidazole for 10-14 days. This approach achieved high eradication rates and became a preferred choice in regions with high clarithromycin resistance.

As antibiotic resistance continued to pose a challenge, tailored eradication protocols gained prominence. These protocols involved performing H. pylori susceptibility testing to guide the selection of appropriate antibiotics.

Genotypic testing, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing, became widely used to detect antibiotic resistance genes in H. pylori strains. This information allowed clinicians to customize treatment regimens based on individual patient's resistance patterns.
