Mesomark assay

Mesomark Assay is a blood test used to monitor mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs. This test measures the levels of Soluble Mesothelin-Related Peptides (SMRPs), which are often elevated in patients with mesothelioma.

Overview

The Mesomark Assay is the first blood test approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for monitoring patients with mesothelioma. It is not used for diagnosis, but rather for monitoring the progression of the disease in patients who have already been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Procedure

The Mesomark Assay is a simple blood test. A healthcare provider will draw a sample of the patient's blood, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The test measures the levels of SMRPs in the blood. Elevated levels of SMRPs can indicate the presence of mesothelioma.

Limitations

While the Mesomark Assay can be a useful tool in monitoring the progression of mesothelioma, it has its limitations. It is not a diagnostic tool and cannot be used to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. Additionally, not all patients with mesothelioma will have elevated levels of SMRPs.
