Maurice McGregor
Maurice McGregor is a renowned cardiologist and a pioneer in the field of health technology assessment (HTA). He has made significant contributions to the development and application of HTA in Canada and internationally.
Early Life and Education
Maurice McGregor was born in South Africa. He completed his medical degree at the University of Cape Town in 1948. He then moved to Canada in 1957, where he completed his cardiology training at the University of Toronto.
Career
McGregor started his career as a cardiologist at the Montreal General Hospital. He later became the head of the Division of Cardiology at the Montreal Heart Institute and the Royal Victoria Hospital.
In 1987, McGregor founded the Health Technology Assessment Unit at the McGill University Health Centre. This unit was one of the first of its kind in Canada and has since become a model for other HTA units across the country.
McGregor has also served as the Chair of the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment (now known as CADTH). He has been instrumental in promoting the use of HTA in healthcare decision-making in Canada and around the world.
Contributions to Health Technology Assessment
McGregor's work in HTA has had a significant impact on healthcare policy and practice. He has been a strong advocate for the use of HTA in healthcare decision-making, arguing that it can help to ensure that healthcare resources are used efficiently and effectively.
McGregor has also contributed to the development of methods for HTA. He has published numerous articles on the subject and has been a key figure in the development of the HTA Database, a comprehensive resource for information on health technology assessments from around the world.
Awards and Honours
McGregor has received numerous awards and honours for his contributions to cardiology and HTA. These include the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honour in the country, and the Jubilee Medal from the Queen Elizabeth II.
