Conscientious objector

Conscientious objector is a term used to describe an individual who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion.

In some countries, conscientious objectors are assigned to an alternative civilian service as a substitute for conscription or military service. Some conscientious objectors consider themselves pacifist, non-interventionist, non-resistant, non-aggressionist, or anti-imperialist.

History

The term "conscientious objector" was first used in the legal sense in 1916, during the First World War. The concept of conscientious objection has been traced back to the early Christian church.

Legal status

The legal status of conscientious objectors has varied over the years and from nation to nation. In general, conscientious objector status is only considered in the context of military conscription and is not applicable to volunteer military forces.

Conscientious objection around the world

Different countries have different systems for handling conscientious objectors. Some jurisdictions allow for a service of equal length in a non-combatant role (such as in a hospital or in a non-combatant logistic role). Others, like Norway, have a specific civilian national service period that is equal in length to the military service.
