Nic Waal
Nic Waal (1 January 1905 – 22 May 1960) was a Norwegian psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and child psychiatrist. She was a pioneer in the field of child psychiatry and made significant contributions to the development of psychoanalysis in Norway.
Early Life and Education
Nic Waal was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. She was the daughter of engineer Carl Waal and Anna Marie, née Nielsen. She studied medicine at the University of Oslo and graduated in 1930.
Career
After graduation, Waal worked at the psychiatric clinic at the University of Oslo. In 1934, she moved to Berlin, where she underwent psychoanalytic training. She returned to Norway in 1939 and established her own practice.
During the Second World War, Waal was active in the Norwegian resistance movement. After the war, she focused on child psychiatry and established the Nic Waal Institute, which is still active today.
Personal Life
Waal was married to the writer Sigurd Hoel from 1937 to 1956. They had two children together.
Legacy
Nic Waal's contributions to psychiatry and psychoanalysis have had a lasting impact. The Nic Waal Institute continues to be a leading institution in the field of child psychiatry in Norway.
