Bladder training is a behavioral therapy that helps individuals regain control over their bladder. This therapy is often used for individuals who suffer from urinary incontinence or frequent urination.

Bladder training involves adjusting the times you go to the bathroom, delaying urination, and doing pelvic floor exercises. The goal is to improve bladder control and increase the amount of urine your bladder can hold. This therapy is often used in conjunction with other treatments, such as medication or surgery.

Process[edit]

The process of bladder training usually involves the following steps:

  1. Monitoring and scheduling: You keep a diary of when you urinate and when you leak urine. This helps you and your healthcare provider understand your bladder patterns.
  2. Delaying urination: Once you have established a pattern, you can begin delaying urination. You start by trying to hold off for 10 minutes every time you feel an urge to urinate. The goal is to lengthen the time between trips to the bathroom until you're urinating only every 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
  3. Pelvic floor exercises: Also known as Kegel exercises, these exercises help strengthen the muscles that help control urination.
