It is bounded anteriorly by the pterygomandibular raphe, posteriorly by the parotid gland, medially by the medial pterygoid muscle, and laterally by the mandible. The space contains the inferior alveolar nerve, the lingual nerve, and the sphenomandibular ligament.

Clinical Significance

The Pterygomandibular Space is of particular importance in dentistry. It is the site where local anesthetic is often administered prior to dental procedures, specifically those involving the lower teeth. This is known as an inferior alveolar nerve block.
