Suprarenal plexus

Suprarenal Plexus is a network of nerve fibers that provides innervation to the adrenal gland. It is also known as the adrenal plexus or plexus suprarenalis.

Etymology

The term "suprarenal" is derived from the Latin words "supra" meaning "above" and "renalis" meaning "kidney". The term "plexus" is derived from the Latin word for "braid", referring to the interweaving of nerves.

Anatomy

The suprarenal plexus is formed by branches from the celiac plexus, the abdominal aortic plexus, and the renal plexus. It is located above the renal artery and is connected to the adrenal gland.

Function

The suprarenal plexus carries both sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers. The sympathetic fibers originate from the thoracic spinal cord, specifically the T10-T12 segments. These fibers stimulate the adrenal gland to secrete adrenaline and noradrenaline, hormones that prepare the body for 'fight or flight' response. The parasympathetic fibers originate from the vagus nerve and are involved in the 'rest and digest' response.

Clinical Significance

Damage to the suprarenal plexus can lead to adrenal insufficiency, a condition characterized by fatigue, low blood pressure, and muscle weakness. This can be caused by trauma, surgery, or diseases such as Addison's disease.
