Azelastine

Azelastine, marketed under brand names such as Optivar among others, is a medication widely used to manage symptoms of allergic reactions, notably allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic conjunctivitis. It is available in various forms, including nasal sprays and eye drops, catering to different allergic conditions. In some cases, Azelastine is also used to treat asthma and skin rashes through oral administration.

Uses

Azelastine is primarily utilized for:

  • Allergic Rhinitis: It alleviates symptoms such as sneezing, itchy and runny nose caused by hay fever.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis: It reduces eye-related symptoms, including itching, redness, and watering.
  • Other Allergic Reactions: Though less common, oral Azelastine may be prescribed for asthma and skin rashes linked to allergic reactions.

Mechanism of Action

Azelastine is an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is a substance in the body that becomes elevated during allergic reactions, contributing to symptom severity. By inhibiting its action, Azelastine effectively reduces allergic symptoms.

Administration

  • Nasal Spray: For allergic rhinitis, the nasal spray formulation provides direct relief of nasal symptoms.
  • Eye Drops: For managing allergic conjunctivitis, eye drops target ocular symptoms.
  • Oral Administration: In specific cases, Azelastine can be taken by mouth for broader allergic symptom management.

Onset and Duration of Effects

  • Eyes: When used as eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis, the onset of effects is within minutes, providing quick relief.
  • Nose: The nasal spray form begins to alleviate symptoms within an hour of application.
  • The effects of Azelastine, regardless of administration route, last for up to 12 hours, offering extended relief from allergic symptoms.

Side Effects

While Azelastine is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects such as:

  • Bitter taste in the mouth following nasal spray use.
  • Temporary eye irritation or blurred vision with eye drops.
  • Drowsiness or fatigue, particularly with oral use.
